MareNet - a new electronic information service for marine science

Michael Hohlfeld

Institute for Science Networking, Oldenburg
MareNet (www.marenet.de) offers online services which enable marine scientists to keep in touch with the worldwide marine science community and to receive all specific information one may need.
This fieldspecific portal is another practical example of the use of modern methods of digital libraries and the management of scientific information, in particular the use of metadata harvesting and basing on distributed information sources.
Primarily this service is an example to transfer the experiences with the well-known PhysNet-service to an other discipline.

The present status of MareNet will be shown, its different services, its concept and the development of its usage throughout the first few month of operation will be described.

MareNet is umbrellaed and supported by the German Society for Marine Research (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Meeresforschung - DGM). A short report of this cooperation will be given as well as an outlook to following activities to integrate the DGM to the IuK-Initiative of the Learned Societies in Germany.
