ZPID-Monitor of internationalization

Conceptualization and structure

Stimulated by the position paper by Gigerenzer, Rösler, Spada, Amelang, Bierhoff, Ferstl et al. (1999) and the following discussion in the scientific community, ZPID began a prospective study on the international activity of the scientific community (of psychology): the ZPID-Monitor of internationalization, internationality and international success of psychology from the German-speaking countries.

Using this method, not only are developments continuously assessed, but options for action are also provided and put under consideration (Schui, 2004; Krampen & Montada 2002; Krampen, Montada & Schui 2002; Schui, Krampen & Montada 2002). In addition, options for improving the situation are developed (Krampen, Montada, Müller & Schui 2005; Montada & Krampen 2001).

At the time being, the ZPID-Monitor assesses two areas, which are important for internationality:

  • The production of English-speaking literature (using the database PSYNDEX) and
  • The international reception of authors from the German-speaking region (using the Social Sciences Citation Index1).

Furthermore, during the reporting years 1999-2003 an e-mail survey on further, internationally relevant scientific activities was conducted. Data were obtained on:

  • Editorial boards of international scientific journals
  • Reviewer activities of international scientific journals
  • International conference participation (active/passive)
  • Membership in international associations
  • Guest residences in foreign countries (own/others)
  • International co-operations
  • English and other foreign language publications

Starting in the reporting year 2004, the e-mail survey was discontinued as a result of little change in the data and the strongly limited representativity of the results because of continuously sinking response rates.

The ZPID-Monitor sample

The analyses on international reception and the e-mail survey were based on the ZPID-Monitor sample, which had the following qualities:

  • Subjects: university lecturers with doctorate or post-doctorate qualifications, who are employed in psychology departments (graduate or master programs) in the German-speaking region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland),
  • Yearly update using the psychology calendar (Hogrefe Publishing),
  • Comprises approx. 2,000 people

Results

The results of this method are published yearly on the ZPID's web portal as a detailed report and submitted to the scientific journal »Psychologische Rundschau« as a short report. Publishing of the short report in the »Psychologische Rundschau« takes place in consultation with the editors.

Furthermore, the detailed report is provided separately to the executive board of the German Society for Psychology (DGPs)2, the Association of German Professional Psychologists (BDP)3 and the Federal College of Psychotherapists4.

Perspectives

In light of rising demands on degree of detail and bibliometric data's interpretation possibilities, new analyses options are being developed. For select international journals (analyzed by Thomson Reuters or Elsevier), these show the proportion of papers, in which authors from the German-speaking region are involved, and their citations. These are compared to the average citation rate per article (per journal) and investigated pertaining to the diversity of nationalities of the citing authors.
