Project Description

In order to guarantee researchers’ sustainable handling of research data, universities and non-university research institutes are held increasingly liable for providing data management infrastructures and services. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to present general guidelines on data management as well as subject- and data-specific standards in a comprehensible and easily accessible way.

To meet these requirements, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has initiated the funding guideline "Investigation of research data management and its life cycle at universities and non-university research institutes". Our project "Process-oriented development of management tools for research data in its life cycle" (PODMAN) is part of this funding guideline. The primary goal of PODMAN is to develop a reference model for research data management (RDM) and an associated process-oriented benchmarking procedure. Consequently, this project aims at providing an orientation framework for universities and non-university research institutes that can be used for the flexible implementation of individual solutions of data management strategies. The development of the framework follows a process-oriented strategic approach in which we consider the research process and the management of the data life cycle as two interacting social processes.

Given the rather unstructured interaction between these two processes, the need to provide general guidelines for the implementation of data management strategies becomes obvious.

In order to give structure to the processes involved in RDM we will pursue the following strategic objectives. Understanding the specific interactions between the different actors by making use of a comparative process analysis. This analysis considers the RDM infrastructures and services currently available at Trier University and ZPID regarding humanities and psychology.

Developing successful management instruments regarding collaboration, communication and qualification. The model-based benchmarking developed within the PODMAN project enables universities and non-university research institutes to establish more customized and research-oriented solutions for their RDM strategies and services. Additionally, PODMAN enables researchers to integrate RDM into their own research process so that they can play an active part in the development of the RDM strategy.
